Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. What is cockiness? It’s really over confidence mixed with an overblown belief that you are better than someone else or that your opinions are better than the other person. Pride is not a bad thing, if it is focused on who deserves the credit. God blessed you to be smart, to be athletic or to be any other “thing” you happen to be! Watch the Pride

The Bible says in everything, glorify God!

You see the difference in how people handle this directive. For some athletes being interviewed, you hear a humble approach, “I was blessed to have a great game today. I want to give all the glory to God,” versus the cocky interview, “I had a great day today. No one could cover me. I’m the man. You can write that down!” In the first case, the athlete is humble enough to know he’s blessed to be playing and is one moment away from losing that blessing, and that God controls every moment of life. The cocky person is so self-absorbed they think the whole world is about them. They have no idea everyone who hears them silently wishes for them to be brought down a notch.

We’re all a little cocky at times, but let’s remember that God is the source of all good things. He doesn’t like it when we steal His glory. Let’s acknowledge God in all we do so we won’t, “be that guy” who is haughty and cocky and all about himself!!

You may have good looks; thank God. They could be gone tomorrow! You may be athletic; thank God. The athleticism could be gone tomorrow! You may be wealthy; thank God. It could all be gone tomorrow!

Be humble about your blessings, because God clearly warns, “Pride goes before destruction and haughtiness before the fall.” We ignore God at our own risk!! Let others praise your gifts; but you thank God for them and say “Thank you, we are very blessed.” Be a good steward of your gifts; don’t be vain or self-centered, and God will continue to bless your life!!

A personal message …

These devotions were written to my four children, Christian, Mike, Allison and Alex. By the kids allowing these to be shared publically, our hope is that the devotions will make a positive and eternal difference in the lives of other young people as they mature. Enjoy. Rick Isaacson
