Ephesians 6:2-3 “Honor Those Parents”

“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Boy, God really was having a good day when He developed The 10 Commandments and commanded that you honor your mother and father. But, as young people, it’s kind of difficult to follow this rule when you’re making your own way in the world and parents are just messin’ up your chance to be yourself. Actually, believe it or not, parents bark all that parental advice in an effort to help their children not encounter the pain that comes on us when we make bad decisions.

The devil is a “screw up” promoter extraordinaire, just filling us with the temptations of letting loose and taking what we want, not allowing us a moment to contemplate the potential error of our decision to “party on.” Then, after the fact, when we have to pay the price, when the guilt of our stupidity is weighing on our shoulders like a ton of bricks, the devil is nowhere to be found. The devil is the definition of the biggest loser!!

But fortunately, God is still there, and your parents are still there, having pain right along with you, and forgiving you for whatever action you took, wishing we could stop the pains of youth. God says He gives us total forgiveness and perfect peace as His children. Once again, a clean slate and a new start with a little more experience than you had yesterday.

Of course, the devil will be right there, whispering that you’re ruined from your mistakes. Don’t fall for the freakin’ loser’s BS! Everyone has screw ups; we don’t give up because of them; we learn from them; we get stronger from them and make better decisions next time. That’s what your parents pray for and what God wants for you. The devil will be there to tempt you again and again to “just be that loser one more day.” Listen to your parents. Put the devil out on his ear, and “it will go well with you.”

That’s the dream of every parent, that their children’s lives will go well, and you’ll enjoy a long life, with less and less pain from bad decisions. Sow a good thought... Make a good decision... Do a good action... Build a habit of character... Your parents will take incredible pride in your success!

A personal message...

“These devotions were written to my four children, Christian, Mike, Allison and Alex. By the kids allowing these to be shared publicly, our hope is that the devotions will make a positive and eternal difference in the lives of other young people as they mature. Enjoy. Rick Isaacson”
