Luke 17:10 “It’s Your Duty”
“So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’ ”
It’s so opposite the approach that the world always pursues. “Hey boss, I worked 12 minutes over yesterday. Can I take off early today?” Or, “I decided I would allow that little old lady to go ahead of me in line; wasn’t that nice?”
But, as we truly begin to mature as Christians, we think like this sometimes. I read that devotion every day and try to forward it to those I care about. I pray every day, and I pray for others. As a Christian, I try to model what God wants in my life, and I hope people will see the difference it makes in my life. I attend church weekly, and I try to help out in some way because the church needs everyone helping out. I sense the Holy Spirit guiding my life and helping me discern decisions. I understand sin is a dangerous and destructive force that is extremely powerful; I don’t mess with it. I am trying to learn to eliminate as much evil as I can from my life. I would kind of like an “atta boy” once in a while.
God sees these good behaviors and says, “Yeah, so what! You still need My Son’s sacrifice and grace to save you. I am GOD, and I gave you everything. So yes, I appreciate your appreciation. But, I expect you to do your duty, and more importantly, I expect your LOVE! I chose YOU dummy! Do you have any idea how lucky you are? Am I being too tough? Think about it. A few years of doing what you can to show your love to Me and appreciation for what My Son did for you and My Holy Spirit continues to do in your life, for an eternal reward, that’s forever and ever and ever, you want what again?”
Kind of makes for a humbling awareness, doesn’t it? Who do we think we are, like we have anything to offer Perfection?! Once we realize just how blessed we are, we do what we can to make a difference, and we don’t expect kudos and cheers. We understand we’re one soul, doing our duty, in a spiritual world full of souls, some good and many very evil. We are servant leaders, servants to those that need our help and servants to God while we hang out in this human body. The end game is our role in heaven. That’s the only goal line and result that matters. Now, do your duty with a smile and LOVE God for giving you, an unworthy soul and a chance to hang out with Him forever! Sometimes you just can’t sugar coat a message.
A personal message...
“These devotions were written to my four children, Christian, Mike, Allison and Alex. By the kids allowing these to be shared publicly, our hope is that the devotions will make a positive and eternal difference in the lives of other young people as they mature. Enjoy. Rick Isaacson”
